Right now is the ideal  time to get started on laser hair removal if your goal is to be razor free by the first days of summer. Laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted hair, razor burn and ingrown hairs for men and women of all skin colors.

 Who is the best candidate?

Laser hair removal generally doesn’t work on blonde, gray or red hair, and those with dark hair and light colored skin tend to be the best candidates for laser hair reduction. Generally, the lighter your skin, and the darker your hair, the more effective the treatment. At this time of year, most of us are no longer tan from the summer months or our tans have faded, so it is truly, the perfect time of year to start your Laser Hair Removal treatments. At A Perfect Touch, we are able to safely and effectively treat all skin types, and are happy to offer complimentary consultations to see if Laser Hair Removal is right for you.

How does it work?

We use the state-of-the-art Palomar Starlux, an intense Light (IPL) system for permanent hair reduction.  Using a wide beam, IPL quickly treats larger areas, causing localized damage to the hair by selectively heating dark matter called melanin, in the hair this is called the follicle, while not heating the rest of the skin. IPL hair removal is fast, painless and safe on light and dark skin and hair.  Unlike some hair removal treatments, IPL’s intense pulse light energy results in a gentle and pain free skin care treatment, gently removing hair while leaving your skin silky smooth and putting an end to shaving, waxing and tweezing.

How many treatments are needed?

Hair grows in three different phases (anagen, telogen, catagen) and a laser can only affect the currently active growing hair follicles (anagen). This is why several sessions are needed to kill hair in all phases of growth.

The three stages of hair growth.

The three stages of hair growth.

The number sessions needed depends on several different factors, including which area of the body is being treated, skin color, hair color, coarseness of the hair, gender, hormones, density of the hair, etc. Each person has a unique biology however, so laser hair removal is not an exact science. That being said, with all of those considerations in mind, and for the safest and most effective treatment possible, the average number of treatments is:
Face: 6-10 treatments every 2-4 weeks.
Body: 6-10 treatments every 4-10 weeks.

What are the most common side-effects and risks?

During treatment: discomfort.

Post treatment (most common): itching, redness, and swelling (perifollicular edema) around the treatment area. These side effects rarely last more than 72 hours.

Unwanted side effects and risks:  hypo- or hyper-pigmentation, blistering, scarring, skin texture changes, flare of acne, swelling around the hair follicle, scab formation, purpura, infection and burning of the skin

What areas can be treated?
Anywhere that grows hair (as long as there isn’t any underlying contraindications).

  1. Have you had much success removing those weird hairs that tend to come back time and time again like those spiky chin hairs or hairs that grow in a mole?

    • Karyn says:

Great question Hafsa! If the spikey chin hairs have pigment, yes! The darker hairs are typically much easier to get rid of, as the laser can more easily focus on the root bulb due to the higher quantity of pigment. The one exception is if the skin is also of a darker color. The hair can still be removed, but will likely require more treatments for a successful outcome. If the hair is within a mole, the settings will be adjusted accordingly, so as not to harm the mole. If the hair is white or light however, laser treatments will likely not be successful. For those light hairs, especially on the upper lip or chin, electrolysis might be the answer.

Laser Hair Removal is most effective when there is a greater contrast between the pigment in the skin and the pigment of the hair. This time of year is the perfect time to get started on treatments, as most people in the Northern Hemisphere are not as sun-kissed as they would be during the warmer months.

      🙂
