They tend to wreak a bit of havoc on your skin’s appearance. During the winter and holiday months we love to look our best but our festive and active habits may be counterproductive to this goal. In order to look your glowing best there are just a few quick tricks to follow.
Believe it or not, exfoliating not only returns your skin to it’s youthful glow, but also helps your skin to be hydrated. As your plump juicy skin cells work their way to the surface they dump their Natural Moisture Factors, which leads to more moisture in your skin. Without regular exfoliation those dead skin cells accumulate in layers and slow the process of cells moving upward and therefore, reduce the amount of moisture being released into the epidermis. Humectants are your friends as well. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA and glycerin are humectants, meaning they take moisture from the air and bond it to your skin. My personal favorite, hyaluronic acid can actually hold 1,000 times its weight in water! During these dry winter months, why not take advantage of the steam in your bathroom after a shower by applying a thin layer of hyaluronic acid to your skin before applying your moisturizer? The added benefit of this particular humectant is that it will help any products you apply afterwards penetrate even better and cause your skin to look more plump in the process as well.

Water is usually your skin’s best friend however, during the winter months when the air is colder the last thing you should do is take an extremely hot shower as it will strip your skin’s natural oils away and leave you feeling even more itchy and dry. Hot tubs, while quite relaxing after a cold day on the slopes, really do a number on the skin. Not only will the heat from the water strip your body’s natural oils but the chlorine and/or bromine are quite drying as well so limit your time if you must indulge. On the other hand, consuming water will work wonders for your skin in more ways than one. Drinking water will obviously improve hydration levels in your skin but drinking warm or even hot water has the added benefit of being detoxifying and cleansing (quite a benefit after all those holiday events). I often see clients during the holidays that have broken out between and above their eyes. This area corresponds to the liver and kidneys in Chinese medicine and makes sense if you’ve been overindulging in rich foods and alcoholic beverages. By drinking lots of warm and hot water throughout the day you can help support both of those organs and dramatically reduce the likelihood of breakouts due to slowed and overworked kidneys and the liver.
