Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It has been used for many years, but has only recently regained poplularity. Unlike Dermabrasion, a medical procedure in which the skin is exfoliated with abrasive wands, crystals, or ultrasonic vibrations, Dermaplaning is a simple shaving of the epidermis. Both result in removal of superficial layers of dead skin, but with Dermaplaning, you get the added bonus of removing the vellus hairs without being rough on the skin.

The procedure involves the use of a sterile, medical grade scalpel, held at a 45 degree angle to the skin. The esthetician will gently scrape the surface of the skin using light, feathery strokes, to remove vellus hairs, dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. This treatment results in softer, smoother, glowing skin, increased collagen and elastin production, and increases in the skin cell turnover rate. Additional benefits include deeper at-home product penetration as well as better product penetration for more aggressive anti-aging treatments in the spa, such as laser/IPL treatments or for chemical peels.

Dermaplaning services can be tailored to suit each client’s individual needs and can be done every 2 weeks or on an as-needed basis (many clients schedule every 4-6 based on length of time it takes for vellus hair to return). Our Dermaplaning treatments range from simple removal of vellus hairs and dead skin cells, to advanced anti-aging treatments that combine simple Dermaplaning with either an enzymatic or chemical peel, peptides, nourishing vitamins and a facial massage. All services include a topical multi-vitamin for the skin, sun protection, and a cool stone massage.

This treatment is great for clients who are pregnant or nursing, who have excess vellus hair (peach fuzz) on the skin, those who may be sensitive to the heat or pressure of waxing the vellus hair, or clients who simply have rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles and want to see improvement in those areas. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance with no downtime, which everyone can appreciate.

The only clients who would be contraindicated for this treatment would be those with an allergy to nickel, who have thick, dark hair in the area to be treated, numerous raised lesions on the skin, active cold sores and/or inflamed acne.

* Contrary to popular belief, removing the vellus hairs will NOT result in your facial hair growing back faster, thicker,  darker, or coarse. Superficial vellus hair will simply continue to grow back at a similar pace and with a similar texture as before.
